Ubud Community Women's Safety Crowd Map
A few attacks on women have taken place around Ubud lately. Victims have had their breasts and backs grabbed while walking or on motorbike, and the perpetrators seem to have been younger men on the bike. While such incidents are escalating at an alarming rate, Ubudians are not sure to whom and how to report them.
In response to this issue, Kopernik has decided to help create "Ubud Community Women Safety Crowd Map" where victims or witnesses can report occurrences of women assaults using their mobile devices or computers. These reports will then be mapped using Ushahidi platform to detect hotspots in the community.
Crowdmaps have become popular and effective tools in identifying community needs in places where there is often an information gap between the public and local authority in terms of where public resources should be allocated. It is indeed with this very hope that all Ubudians can participate actively in this initiative as ‘citizen journalists’ we can improve the accountability and performance of the local police or banjars in enforcing community safety throughout Ubud.
This map is indeed only the first step to reviving the safe Ubud that we all once knew it to be. We will use the information collected on this map to help the local authorities to catch the culprits and stop these incidents from happening again in future.
